Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Red Line) Phase I Ready for Launch: 4.97 km Dahisar East-Kashigaon Stretch to Open in March 2026, Easing Western Express Highway Congestion

Mumbai, March 3, 2026: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is in the final stages of launching the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 9, a critical extension of the Red Line that will connect the northern suburbs of Mira-Bhayandar to the city's growing metro network .
Phase I Details
The initial 4.97-kilometer stretch runs from Dahisar East to Kashigaon and comprises four stations:
-
Dahisar East (interchange with Metro Lines 7 and 2A)
-
Pandurang Wadi
-
Miragaon
-
Kashigaon
Trial runs have been completed successfully, and the CMRS has granted safety certification after recommending minor technical improvements that are currently being implemented . The line is expected to be inaugurated following the conclusion of the state budgetary session .
Full Corridor Overview
The complete Mumbai Metro Line 9 corridor will span 13.58 kilometers from Dahisar East to Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Bhayandar, featuring 10 stations. The line is predominantly elevated, with a short underground section planned . The total project cost is estimated at ₹6,607 crore .
Remaining stations scheduled to open in the next six months include:
-
Sai Baba Nagar
-
Meditiya Nagar
-
Shahid Bhagat Singh Garden (Maxus Mall)
-
Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium
Connectivity and Integration
One of the most significant features of Line 9 is that it serves as an extension of Metro Line 7, meaning trains from Mira Bhayandar will continue towards Andheri East without requiring an interchange at Dahisar East . This provides seamless connectivity to employment hubs along the Western Express Highway.
At Dahisar East station, commuters can also interchange with:
-
Metro Line 7 (Gundavali to Dahisar East) - providing connectivity to Andheri
-
Metro Line 2A (DN Nagar to Dahisar East) - connecting to Andheri West
Future connectivity will include a proposed interchange with Metro Line 10 at Miragaon, which will connect Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk .
Traffic Relief and Commuter Benefits
The new corridor is expected to significantly reduce congestion at the notoriously gridlocked Dahisar Check Naka and along the Western Express Highway . Commuters from Mira-Bhayandar, who currently rely on overcrowded suburban trains and congested roads, will gain a faster, more reliable public transport alternative .
Travel times between Mumbai and the Thane district could potentially be reduced by up to 75 percent, depending on road conditions . The line is projected to handle 11.12 lakh daily passengers by 2031 .
Project Implementation
The line was commissioned in October 2024, and construction work on the Dahisar-Kashigaon section has spanned approximately seven years . The project is being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) .
