Tripartite MoU Signed: Energy-Efficient Appliances to Reach 5 Lakh PMAY Homes in Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam, April 4, 2026: In a major step towards sustainable housing, the Andhra Pradesh government has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide energy-efficient, star-rated appliances to five lakh beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

The agreement was signed between Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation Limited (APSHCL), Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), and AP State Energy Conservation Mission (AP SEEDCO). The MoU, which was initially signed at India Energy Week 2026 in Goa, was formally exchanged on Monday in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Key Highlights:

  • The initiative is the largest energy efficiency programme ever undertaken under PMAY in the country.
  • Conventional electrical appliances in PMAY houses will be replaced with energy-efficient, star-rated ones.
  • The move aims to reduce electricity bills for beneficiaries while promoting environmental sustainability.
  • The programme will be implemented in the first phase for five lakh homes.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed strong support for the Union Government’s push for a people-led movement on energy efficiency and renewable energy. He stated that the Andhra Pradesh government is committed to providing permanent housing to all eligible families by the end of 2029.

“We want to make these PMAY houses not just permanent but also energy-efficient. This will improve the quality of life of beneficiaries and bring real monetary savings,” said Naidu.

Special Chief Secretary (Housing) Ajay Jain described the initiative as a “defining moment” in India’s sustainable housing journey. EESL CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit called it a national milestone and praised Andhra Pradesh for setting a benchmark in large-scale sustainable housing.

Significance:

This partnership is expected to significantly reduce energy consumption in mass housing projects while promoting greener living. It marks a strong collaboration between the state government, central energy agencies, and state energy bodies for climate-friendly development.
