Navi Mumbai Civic Body's Property Tax Amnesty Scheme Collects 20 Crore in Nine Days

Navi Mumbai, March 28: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has received an overwhelming response to its property tax amnesty scheme, collecting 20.15 crore from 5,744 defaulters within just nine days of launch. The scheme, introduced earlier this month, remains open until the end of March.

Key Features of the Scheme

  • 50 per cent waiver on penalty charges for property owners clearing all outstanding dues in a single payment

  • Applies to residential, commercial, industrial, and vacant land properties

  • Covers all pending tax amounts up to the current financial year

  • Available until March 31, 2026

Ward-Wise Collections

Among administrative wards, Nerul recorded the highest collection at approximately 5.70 crore from 899 property owners. Koparkhairane followed with 4.48 crore from 737 taxpayers. Ghansoli saw the highest number of participants with 1,260 property holders contributing 2.88 crore, while Belapur added 2.61 crore. Other wards including Turbhe, Vashi, Airoli, and Digha also reported significant collections.

Digital Adoption Growing

Digital payment channels saw increased usage under the scheme. Approximately 55 per cent of taxpayers (3,134 property owners) opted for online payment methods. The civic body offers multiple payment options including:

  • Official NMMC website

  • WhatsApp-based chatbot service

  • Physical payment at designated collection centres

Extended Hours for Convenience

To facilitate maximum participation, NMMC has kept tax collection centres open on weekends and public holidays, including:

  • Gudi Padwa

  • Ramzan Eid

  • Ram Navami

  • Mahavir Jayanti

This move aims to help salaried individuals and taxpayers who cannot visit centres during regular working days.

Civic Body's Appeal

The municipal corporation has urged remaining defaulters to take advantage of the limited-time waiver and regularise their tax payments before the March 31 deadline.

Significance

Amnesty schemes like this help urban local bodies:

  • Reduce outstanding tax liabilities

  • Encourage voluntary compliance

  • Boost revenue collections for civic infrastructure

  • Promote digital payment adoption

Outlook

With the deadline approaching, NMMC expects more defaulters to come forward and settle their dues. The strong response in the first nine days—over 20 crore from nearly 6,000 taxpayers—indicates the scheme's success in encouraging compliance and providing relief to property owners facing penalty burdens.
