The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has launched a comprehensive survey of 66 slums across the city to assess housing, infrastructure, and amenities.

Visakhapatnam, April 18: Based on the findings, slums that have achieved a certain level of development will be denotified, while others will be redeveloped under a public-private partnership model.

Two Categories

  • Denotified slums: Those that have achieved a certain degree of development

  • Redevelopment slums: Those lagging behind (covered under PPP model)

First Two Slums for Redevelopment

Indira Nagar        G+6 building 110 families

Timeline

  • Completion period: About 2 years from commencement

  • Beneficiary options: Advance rent (~18 months) OR alternative housing at another location

  • Choice made: 70-80% beneficiaries chose rental option (to stay in same locality)

Broader Framework

The initiative forms part of the broader Visakhapatnam Economic Region plan under NITI Aayog's Vizag Growth Hub. GVMC also plans to amend the Municipal Corporation Act, 1979 , to establish a Slum Rehabilitation Authority.

Commissioner's Statement

GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said: "Redevelopment of all these slums will be taken up in a single package in a bid to move the city towards becoming slum-free."
