Indore Metro to Extend to Ujjain and Pithampur; DPR Ready, Service to Begin Soon in Phase 1

Indore, March 10, 2026: Rapid progress is being made on the proposed Indore Metro project connecting Indore, Ujjain, and Pithampur. The process of conducting surveys and preparing the Detailed Project Report is underway. After revising the plan, it has been decided that the metro service will be extended to Mhow as well as Pithampur, leading to changes in the proposed route .
Expansion to Ujjain, Mhow, and Pithampur
Plans are being made to extend the Indore Metro to major surrounding cities in the future. Surveys and DPRs are being prepared for the Indore-Ujjain Metro and Indore-Pithampur Metro corridors. According to officials, after modifying the route, a decision has been made to take the metro to Mhow and Pithampur. Both these cities are considered significant from industrial and military perspectives .
The total length of the proposed metro route could be approximately 90 to 95 kilometers. This will ease travel between Indore, Ujjain, Mhow, and Pithampur, providing people with fast and modern public transport facilities. However, officials state that metro construction work between Indore and Ujjain is likely to begin only after Simhastha 2028 .
Y-Shape Track Design
The track design in the Indore Metro expansion plan has been prepared in a special way. According to information, the metro track will be built in a Y-Shape layout. Under the plan, there is consensus to run the metro through underground corridors in densely populated urban areas of Indore and Ujjain .
The metro will run underground from Lavkush Chowk through Bada Ganpati to Rajendra Nagar. From Rajendra Nagar onwards, the route toward Pithampur will be built as an elevated corridor. Meanwhile, from AB Road, the metro track will bifurcate in two directions, with one line going toward Mhow and the other toward Pithampur .
Delay Due to Simhastha 2028
Earlier, the plan was to start metro service between Indore and Ujjain before Simhastha 2028. However, due to delays in surveys and DPR preparation, this plan has been revised. Officials say that if construction work starts now, it could cause inconvenience to millions of devotees coming during the Simhastha fair. For this reason, it is now unofficially believed that metro construction work on the Ujjain route will begin after Simhastha 2028. However, no official announcement has been made yet .
Current Metro Operations
According to the Metro Rail Corporation, 25 trips are operated in each direction, totaling 50 trips throughout the day. Metro service is available from 8 AM to 8 PM, with passengers getting a metro train approximately every 30 minutes. This reduces traffic pressure in the city and provides people with a fast and convenient travel option .
The Indore Metro fare has been divided into 5 zones based on distance, covering a total of 28 metro stations. The minimum fare is ₹20, while the maximum fare can be up to ₹80 .
Benefits to Transport Infrastructure
This proposed expansion of the Indore Metro will bring significant improvement to the city's transport system, providing people with fast, safe, and environmentally friendly travel options. Additionally, connectivity between surrounding cities will be strengthened, especially for cities like Ujjain, Mhow, and Pithampur. Experts believe that in the coming years, the Indore Metro network will play an important role in the economic and urban development of Madhya Pradesh .
