Taking serious view of alleged blatant encroachments in the green belt surrounding the Shahpura lake, the National Green Tribunal has constituted a committee to visit the site and present a report within six weeks.

Bhopal, April 20: The tribunal was hearing a petition filed by environmental activist Nitin Saxena.

Key Allegations

  • Green belt has been blatantly encroached upon

  • Illegal constructions in buffer zone of the lake (violation of Wetland Rules)

  • Untreated water being discharged into the lake

  • Natural drainage channels feeding the lake are being obstructed

  • Efforts to shrink lake area for further encroachments

Lake Background

  • Constructed: 1974-75

  • Purpose: Irrigation and groundwater recharge

  • Current water quality: Class-E (unsuitable for use without treatment)

Environmental Concerns

  • Fish cultivation in polluted waters being used for human consumption (public health concern)

  • Eateries (permanent and temporary) operating around lake; waste thrown into lake

  • Beautification works by Bhopal Municipal Corporation focus on "aesthetic" development without addressing core environmental issues

NGT Order

The bench of Justice Sheo Kumar Singh and expert member Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi noted that a substantial issue of the environment has been raised.

    • Water Resource Department
