All construction activities and land transactions have been banned in select parts of Gaya district as the state government moves ahead with an ambitious satellite township development plan and a long-pending master plan to guide future urban growth.

Gaya, April 28: The restrictions will remain in force till March 31, 2027.

Areas Affected

  • Gaya Municipal Corporation: 2 wards (ward 29 – western outskirts; ward 46 – southern part)

  • Bodh Gaya Nagar Parishad: 20 of 33 wards (severely impacted)

  • Revenue villages: 80 across 3 blocks

    • Bodh Gaya block: 55 villages (most affected)

    • Gaya Town block: 19 villages (including Hario village – strategic for airport expansion)

    • Paraiyya block: 6 villages

  • Magadh Colony

  • Shastri Nagar

Reason for Ban

  • To prevent haphazard development in identified planning zones

  • To facilitate satellite township development

  • To regulate planned urban expansion under proposed master plan

Gaya Airport Expansion Context

  • Current runway: 2,285 metres long, 45 metres wide (cannot accommodate wide-body aircraft)

  • Required extension: Minimum 500 metres in length + 15 metres in width

Background

Gaya's previous master plan dates back to the 1960s. Its validity expired over two decades ago, and the city has been operating without an approved master plan since then.
