DDMA Issues Eviction Notices to Yamuna Bazar Residents, Warns of Demolition

New Delhi, May 8: DDMA has issued eviction notices to Yamuna Bazar residents, granting them a 15-day window to clear the area. Following that period, demolition will commence if compliance is not met. The proactive measure aims to enhance safety during imminent monsoon floods.

Why Eviction Notices Were Issued

An illegal encroachment in the form of a residential cluster having approximately 310 dwellings at Yamuna Bazar exists within the wall along the banks of Yamuna in the O-Zone, comprising floodplain land owned by DDA. The area is inundated during Yamuna floods every year, posing serious threat to loss of human life, cattle and property. The O-Zone along Yamuna is designated as a protected, no-construction floodplain under DDA management.

Residents Affected

Only those who have made temporary structures on the floodplains have been issued notices, not all residents of Yamuna Bazar area. There are around 300 such temporary settlements, out of which 26 have been issued eviction notices. The move is solely in view of the safety of inhabitants during the monsoon.

Legal Action and Compliance

In exercise of powers under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the DDMA directed residents to vacate within 15 days from the date of issuance of the notice. Failure to comply will invite a demolition drive by authorities without further notice. DDA said it is following the High Court's order on removal of encroachments from Yamuna floodplains.

Government Oversight

The action comes a week after Delhi Lt Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu chaired a detailed review with DDA officials on rejuvenation works in Yamuna Bazar area, following a visit with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Sandhu directed officials to ensure robust flood mitigation measures. The low-lying area along Ring Road is prone to waterlogging during monsoon, with floodwater hampering traffic movement.
