PMC Cracks Down on 30 RMC Plants in Pune in Three Months Following Residents' Complaints

Pune, April 15: Over the last three months, PMC has taken action against 30 plants , including a facility spread over 27,000 sq ft in Undri last week.

Residents' Complaints

  • Pollution: Cement dust causing respiratory issues among children and elderly

  • Accident risks: Unregulated transport of RMC vehicles; spilled material makes roads slippery, causing accidents for two-wheeler riders

  • Other issues: Reckless driving, mobile phone use while driving, loud music

Action Taken

  • Illegal plants sealed for not complying with norms

  • Demolition drives conducted

  • More actions planned

Official Statement

Pravin Shende, senior official of PMC's building permission department, said: "Many illegal plants have been sealed for not complying with norms. We have also conducted demolition drives."

Policy Under Consideration

The civic body's standing committee is contemplating a policy for better management of the plants, which would include shifting RMC plants out of city limits.

Resident Voices

Pawan Mokashi, a resident of Dhayari: "The unauthorised cement plants in this region are causing hazardous levels of pollution. Cement dust gets accumulated in the homes of nearby residents, leading to respiratory issues among children and the elderly."

Santosh Kulkarni, Sinhagad Road resident: "The dumpers and mixers transporting ready-mix concrete frequently spill material onto the roads. This not only increases the concentration of cement dust in the air but also makes the road surface slippery, causing accidents."

Political Intervention

Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni visited Dhayari last week and sought the shifting or demolition of the plants in these areas.

Next Steps

A report from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board is awaited on the functioning of some plants. The administration will plan its future course of action based on the report.
