Over 30 Buildings Razed for Road Widening in Varanasi's Baulia Lehartara Area

Varanasi, April 17: Amid tight security, a PWD team led by Executive Engineer K K Singh reached the area with earthmover machines, bulldozers, loaders, and dumpers.

Project Details

  • Project cost: ₹410 crore

  • Project: Six-lane conversion of Mohansarai-Chakia crossing road via Varanasi Cantonment railway station and DDU Nagar (Mughalsarai)

  • Sanctioned: 2021

  • Construction started: 2023

Demolition Background

Demarcated portions of 41 buildings in the area could not be removed earlier as building owners had sought refuge at the Allahabad High Court , staking claim to the land. The High Court gave time to petitioners until PWD produced documents regarding land ownership. After PWD submitted all required documents, the court allowed demolition to resume.

Project Status

  • Mohansarai to Lehartara: ~75% complete

  • Chowkaghat to Bhadauchungi: Completed (optimum widening with available space)

  • Bhadauchungi to Padao: Part of railway's six-lane double-decker signature bridge across Ganga

  • Padao to DDU Nagar: On verge of completion

Official Statement

Divisional Commissioner S Rajalingam said land on which the buildings exist is owned by PWD. He assured that only such portion of land is being taken which can be used for road construction, with safety measures in place.
