Chennai, May 1, 2026: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has introduced QR code-based property tax payments to accelerate collections, especially after delays caused by staff deployment during the election period.

Digital Push to Boost Collections

Residents can now scan a QR code via mobile to instantly pay property tax through GCC’s official website and social media platforms.

Revenue Targets and Current Status

• Annual collection target: ₹900 crore
• Amount collected so far: ₹511 crore
• Remaining target: ₹400 crore
• Total assessees: 14 lakh+ taxpayers

Reason Behind the Move

Due to election duties:

• Door-to-door collections were paused
• Physical recovery efforts slowed
• Digital payments introduced to bridge the gap

Focus on Recovering Pending Dues

• Long-term pending dues: ₹120 crore
• GCC earlier released a defaulters list, helping recover ₹70 crore

Incentives Driving Compliance

The civic body continues to encourage early payments:

5% rebate offered for payments made before April 30
• Previous fiscal saw record collections exceeding ₹2,000 crore
