Ghaziabad Development Body Now Requires Tree Plantation for All New Plot Approvals

The Ghaziabad Development Authority has made tree plantation based on plot size mandatory to boost the green cover of the city. Under the new rule, effective from April 1, approval will not be granted until provisions are made in the map showing land earmarked for plantation.

Ghaziabad, April 11: A security deposit has been introduced, which will be refunded if officials are satisfied with the plantation carried out on the plots.

Tree Plantation Norms

Commercial/Industrial (per 80 sqm) 2 trees
Commercial/Industrial (per hectare)        250 trees
School & Park areas 20% of land area for greenery (50% fruit-bearing trees with large canopy if 50+ trees)

Context: Trees Lost to Development

  • Hindon elevated road project: 375 trees

  • Delhi-Meerut Expressway refurbishment: 2,760 trees and shrubs

  • Namo Bharat project: 2,029 trees and shrubs

Pollution Concern

According to an analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Ghaziabad was India's most polluted city during the last winter, recording an average PM2.5 concentration of 172 micrograms per cubic metre (national standard: 60 micrograms per cubic metre). Trees can filter out PM2.5.

Green Cover Status

The India State of Forest Report 2023 stated Ghaziabad's green cover increased by only 0.03% compared to the 2021 report – a figure contested by environmentalists.
