Nagpur Municipal Corporation Flags ₹259 Crore Tax Dues as 28,000+ Properties Remain Untaxed in Nagpur

Nagpur, April 29, 2026: A major revenue gap has surfaced in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), with over 28,398 property owners reportedly not paying property tax even once since acquiring or constructing their properties.
The total outstanding dues from these long-term defaulters have reached approximately ₹259.48 crore, raising serious concerns over gaps in tax assessment and recovery systems.
Major Zones with Highest Defaults
Data shows that the issue is widespread across all 10 zones of the city:
• Ashi Nagar: 6,821 properties, ₹59.81 crore dues
• Mangalwari: 4,410 properties, ₹41.37 crore dues
• Laxmi Nagar: 3,561 properties, over ₹41 crore dues
• Hanuman Nagar: 2,881 properties, ₹30.16 crore dues
• Dharampeth: 1,429 properties, ₹26.89 crore dues
• Lakadganj: 4,144 properties, ₹24.85 crore dues
Other affected zones include Nehru Nagar, Gandhibagh, Satranjipura and Dhantoli, indicating that the problem spans both residential and commercial areas.
Systemic Lapses Highlighted
Experts suggest that the issue goes beyond delayed payments, pointing instead to systemic failures. Many of these properties were either never properly assessed or slipped through enforcement checks for years.
Officials note that such a large number of “zero-payment” properties reflects weak verification processes and lack of accountability in tax administration.
Impact on Civic Services
The financial shortfall is directly affecting civic infrastructure. NMC has frequently cited budget constraints for delays in road repairs, drainage projects and other essential services.
With over ₹259 crore in unpaid taxes, the burden of funding civic amenities is increasingly falling on compliant taxpayers.
The development underscores the urgent need for improved property mapping, stricter enforcement and digitisation of tax records to plug revenue leakages.
